Imaginary creatures have been the stuff of legends for hundreds of years. Many similar creatures have popped up in different cultures spread around the world—so are imaginary creatures really only stories, or might they actually exist?

What is it about a horse with a horn that captures our imagination so much more than a horse with stripes? Perhaps the real thrill of imaginary creatures is the magic and mystery they represent. Curl up this spooky season in a world where dragons and fairies, leprechauns and thunderbirds are somewhere out there, causing mischief, just waiting to be discovered.

And read on below for some fun facts, creature math, and more about this issue.

Legend has it...

  • The jackalope can mimic human voices, and sometimes sings along to campfire songs in a sonorous tenor.

  • The thunderbird creates thunder by flapping its wings and lightning by flashing its eyes.

  • Mermaids are considered an unlucky omen, and a sighting of a mermaid can mean a dangerous storm is on the way.
